Even though he lived next door to Teddy Ballgame, Don grew up a Yaz fan, starring as an infielder for Lexington and going on to play at Umass. But his best accomplishments in baseball came as a coach. I was always proud of my dad’s demeanor on the bench: motivational and positive, but never afraid to chew out an opposing coach for treating the game disrespectfully. Players and parents loved him. The main reason I glue myself to the TV for Sox games and scour ESPN for the latest stats is so I can have long baseball conversations with my dad. He’s always been my greatest coach in life and there’s nobody I’d rather sit at Fenway with.
